Travelling Abroad?

At Little Hoppers Animal Hospital, our veterinary surgeons are recognised Official Veterinarians and hold the OCQ(V) - CA (Companion Animals) qualifications to issue Animal Health Certificates and Export Health Certificates for travelling pets.

As of 31st January 2020, the United Kingdom was withdrawn from the Pet Passport Scheme.

Travelling dogs, cats and ferrets now require an Animal Health Certificate to travel into EU Member Countries.

Pet Passports issued outside of the United Kingdom are still permitted for travel between the UK and EU, as long as the rabies vaccination is still valid.

Animal Health Certificates can only be issued within 10 days of your travel date.

To obtain a Animal Health Certificate, your pet must be microchipped and have received a rabies vaccination at least 21 days prior to the date of issue.

An Animal Health Certificate permits a maximum duration of travel of four months.

Dogs travelling to Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, Finland or Malta require the administration of a tapeworm treatment to be permitted entrance. This must be performed by a veterinary surgeon and recorded (signed and stamped) onto the Animal Health Certificate for inspection at border control. The tapeworm treatment must be administered 1-5 days before entrance, i.e. no earlier than 24 hours but no later than 120 hours before entering.

The United Kingdom also requires all dogs to be treated against tapeworm prior to re-entering the U.K. from the EU or Northern Ireland. Again, this must be performed by a veterinary surgeon and recorded (signed and stamped) onto the Animal Health Certificate for inspection at border control. The tapeworm treatment must be administered 1-5 days prior to re-entering the UK, i.e. no earlier than 24 hours but no later than 120 hours before re-entering the UK.

You will need to arrange an appointment with a veterinary surgeon in your destination country to administer the tapeworm treatment to meet these requirements to re-enter the U.K.

The tapeworm regulation is for dogs only - not cats or ferrets.

The cost of an Animal Health Certificate is £125 - additional pets are charged at £40 each (prices are inclusive of VAT).

Example Animal Health Certificate

Animals travelling to countries outside of the EU require an Export Health Certificate (not an Animal Health Certificate). The destination country dictates the requirements that need to be met to permit travel into their country, which may include specific vaccinations, rabies serology blood tests, blood tests to screen for specific infectious diseases and treatment with parasitic medications at defined time intervals. Some of the requirements may need to be performed 3-6 months prior to your travel date, so please ensure you inform us as early as possible! Please follow the link below to find examples of the Export Health Certificate for your destination country.
